Celebrating Halloween

So as some of you may remember, we celebrate holidays a little differently down here :-)  I just wanted to share with you all what we do for Halloween...I have to admit that when I was little I didn't really get the point of the holiday.  I mean it was fun and we would dress up but it was never these ornate costumes you see people with now.  I would go trick or treating in my neighborhood then come home, hang out, and go to bed.  I never went trick or treating after the age of 11.

Fast forward 10 years and I'm teaching.  Imagine 180 students all hyped up on sugar and caffeine from the candy on November 1st.  You know what?  I haven't worked a November 1st since 2006.  Anyways, I digress.  So when we found out we were pregnant with Reagan we started thinking about all these things differently...

So how do we as Christians celebrate a holiday that seemingly is bound with Pagan roots?  There are two schools of thought on this one....one is that we should ignore it completely and pretend it doesn't exist.  The other says that it's no harm no foul so go ahead and celebrate.  Well neither of those worked for us.  You can't just ignore a holiday.  That's like sticking your head in the sand.  Seriously!  However, we didn't want to celebrate a holiday that we weren't 100% comfortable with.  So if we are at home we will hand out candy.  Nothing to crazy though :-)  We don't decorate the house at all, except for some pumpkins.  We are not taking the girls around house to house....that's another blog post in and of itself that has nothing to do with the holiday.  Anyways, our plans are to go to some kind of trunk or treat.  Costumes?  Well we've never done one before and while I'm not crazy about it you can't exactly take kids dressed normally to a trunk or treat!  So I made the girls some candycorn dresses so I'm going to play around with some face paint (heaven help us) and they'll go as candy corn.

So I may not have answered very much or explained things but I tried.  We're just not comfortable going all out and celebrating holiday's that have so many dark things associated with it.  Maybe when our kids are older we can differentiate more between them but that's light years away (I hope).

Please feel free to comment anything you may want to say, but just know that I would never try and change your mind about something you felt strongly about so please don't be rude in comments below.

Happy Halloween!

  1. Halloween is stressful for us. Our kids can't eat the candy, Cameron hates costumes, and we get an average of 200+ trick or treaters in our neighborhood every year. Plus we don't get all into the scary stuff either. This year SH is going to wear one of dress up costumes she already owns and Cameron is going to wear some comfy character pajamas. We're going to a friends house who has also has a special needs child and we're going to have a pizza party with the kids. Low key. I like it.

  3. It doesn't have anything to do with seeing the other kids dressed up or what. It's not like we're keeping the holiday a secret or anything. We are planning on going to trunk or treats or something where there is a different atmosphere to it rather than neighborhoods with ghosts, coffins, etc... in the yard.
